About

Jim Bishop’s three-decade career in education makes him the ideal counselor for high school students looking for the best possible collegiate experience. He knows the college admissions process inside and out. When you work with Jim, you’ll have the peace of mind knowing you’re getting expert guidance backed by many years of experience helping high school students become admitted to great postsecondary institutions across the United States and abroad.

Holding a B.A. in History from Bowdoin College, an M.A. in English from Middlebury College, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Nevada, Reno, Jim is an award-winning teacher of history, literature, philosophy, creative writing, and expository writing, both at the high school and college levels. You’ll get Jim’s expert advice through the process of writing your personal statement and supplementary essays, starting with a brainstorming session, continuing through multiple drafts, and ending with a final review of all your application materials to make sure they shine.

Jim has taught at a boarding school in the mountains of North Carolina; small liberal arts colleges in Vermont, Georgia, and Minnesota; the University of Nevada; and Colorado School of Mines. He served on admissions committees at several of these institutions. He was Head of School at Bozeman Field School, an independent high school where he wore many professional hats, including college admissions counselor for every graduating student from 2019 to 2022. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Peak Academy in Bozeman, and he works on the curriculum development team for Bald Mountain Meadow in Vermont. Jim’s breadth and depth of experience enables him to advise applicants seeking to identify the college or university of their dreams, maximize their potential for college admissions, and make wise financial decisions around college tuition, scholarships, and loans.

Jim takes the time to get to know all his clients as human beings first. Jim’s communication style is curious, holistic, and detail oriented. You won’t feel pressure to apply to a particular school, or follow a specific career path. Instead, you’ll experience the joy of discovering new things about yourself, and you’ll emerge from your sessions with Jim confident that you’re on the path to continued success.

Jim is available to meet in person with clients in the Bozeman area, or via Zoom with clients nationwide.
